MEDITERRANEAN MOBILITIES
This logo was designed for a research department focussing on infrastructural, cultural, social and commercial conditions within the Mediterranean region.
To establish what I wanted the logo to communicate I looked at the history of movement within the Mediterranean basin – movement of commerce, population, power-politics and ideas. The elements of wind and water were the obvious foundations of all these movements as the sea is the historical catalyst for trade, conquest and the sharing of culture.
The mark's windmill-like appearance references wind, movement and industry while the colours allude to land, agriculture, a warm climate and the sea.
The negative space formed by the triangular shapes creates the illusion of
a glaring sun motif. Because of the long, unwieldy name, a typeface with compact width dimensions was chosen to offset its length. However the type remains visually open and lively, matching the optimistic mood of the mark.
